- Elected to Texas State Board of Education, 1984-1984, 1988-present
- Appointed by Gov. Mark White to State Board of Education, 1984-1988
- Elected unanimously Secretary to the State Board of Education, 1988-1998
- Established scholarship program for 5th graders Crossley Elementary, Corpus Christi. Money was set aside for the graduates of the class of 2000 to help them begin college
- Frequent guest speaker on the subject of education to universities and schools throughout Texas
Honors
- Educator of the Year by Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary teachers sorority
- Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of State Boards of Education for exceptional leadership and dedication, 1999
- Dr. Sandra Lanier-Lerma Outstanding Contribution to Literacy Award from the Corpus Christi ISD for continued efforts and dedication to the children of South Texas, December 2002
- Award for dedication to the children from the American G.I. Forum and its founder, Dr. Hector P. Garcia, August 1988
