Could a car accident end your career?

On Behalf of | Nov 15, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Most car accidents merely involve property damage. You’re worried about getting your car fixed, but you know that life is going to go back to normal shortly.

However, serious car accidents can have ramifications that change your entire life. The crash could even end your career. It’s important to understand how this happens, not just so that you can plan for the future, but also so that you can seek the proper amount of compensation.

Your personality could change dramatically

If you suffer a brain injury in a car accident, it could end up changing your personality. For instance, some people struggle with impulse control, so you make decisions without thinking about them. Or you may have been so successful in your career because of your outgoing personality, but you could be more withdrawn and introverted after the crash. This may mean that you can no longer do the job that you were doing before or that you will not be as good at it, leading to a drop in income.

You may have injuries that prevent you from working

Of course, you may also have serious injuries that make it so that you can no longer work. You may find out that you are physically disabled after the crash and that your injuries are never going to entirely heal. Some people have to change what they do for work or seek a new career, while others find that they have to withdraw from the workforce entirely. Either way, that injury leads to more costs than just the medical bills.

It is true that some disabilities are temporary. You could miss a year and then find yourself slowly getting back to work, for instance. But things are especially difficult with spine injuries and head injuries, or with anything involving nerve damage. A full recovery may not be possible.

What can you do?

If it turns out that your career is over because of a car accident that someone else caused, the compensation you need for lost wages and many other costs is likely going to be higher than you may expect. Make sure you take the time to carefully look into all of your legal options.
